The first performance
The first performance belongs at home, for three or four relatives, with a start and an end: announce it, sing, take a bow. The second is at school or a family gathering. A competition comes third, and only once the child has performed twice without tears. The order matters more than the venue: a competition as a first stage teaches fear of being graded rather than love of performing.
